Ian Hankey

Fab Lab Principal Technician
<p>Ian is a master glassmaker with a background in CAD CAM, engineering, art and glass production. He has over 20 years’ experience teaching glassmaking at the Royal College of Art (RCA), Buckinghamshire University and Arts University Plymouth.<br /></p> <p>Ian studied for his BA (Hons) 3D Design at Buckinghamshire College, received a Commendation for his MA at the Royal College of Art, and holds a PGCE in Teaching and Learning Art and Design in Higher Education from the CTLAD London Institute for which he recieved a Distinction.</p> <p>While working as Hot Glass Instructor at the RCA, he gained a distinction on his PGCE in Teaching and Learning Art, Design and Communication at the London Institute. His experience making work for International students at the RCA enabled him to develop an exceptional knowledge of hot glass skills and processes.</p> <p>Ian managed Teign Valley Glass and while there, was awarded international design awards for his glass designs. He has worked professionally as a freelance designer for Habitat, Teign Valley Glass, Selfridges, Caithness Glass and Dartington Crystal.</p> <p>He has taken on several roles at Arts University Plymouth including lecturer in Crafts, teaching Professional Practice college wide, writing and delivering our first external apprenticeship courses, and working as a researcher in sustainable practices. He has published his research in Arts University Plymouth, Making Futures Journals, in History and Heritage and technology journals and has his work published by Columbia University. Ian has also spoken at conferences at Arts University Plymouth the RCA, the V&amp;A and Cambridge University on the subject of the acquisition, application and relevance of skill.</p> <p>His interest in design led him to develop a keen interest in 3D printing, 3D scanning and CAD, and how these digital processes can be combined with the traditional and historic processes of hot glassmaking. He set up and managed Fab Lab Plymouth for four years before stepping back to become part time Principle Technician, and returning to glassmaking as part time technical demonstrator at Arts University Plymouth</p> <p>He has delivered several master classes at the International Festival of Glass, including furnace building, CAD CAM for glassmakers and producing solar powered artwork.</p>
