Our People
Paul O'Sullivan

Paul O’Sullivan attended Plymouth College of Art and completed an OND in Graphic Design in 1988.The Graphics course was drawing based and there was a firm emphasis on experimentation.

“At Plymouth College of Art I developed a life long passion for sketching. My tutor Chris Dart really encouraged us to look at things properly and to try to visually understand them. Whilst computers are the modus operandi now for graphics I still design very much how I did whilst at Plymouth.”

After Plymouth Paul opted to specialise in Illustration studying first at Falmouth then Anglia Ruskin in Cambridge from where he graduated. Paul worked for several years in London and Kent agencies before becoming exclusively freelance. In 2000 Paul moved to Australia and became friends with renowned Australian author Dr Gary Crew.

“Gary has produced in excess of 70 novels and picture books winning many awards including four times winner of book of the year and the aurealis. He was interested in my work and a couple of years back we began to put a picture book together.”

Paul spent a year working and approaching publishers until in May last year when they were contracted to Harbour Publishing, which are part of the New Holland group.

“The majority of work was conducted by hand. All the illustrations were initially rendered in graphite on board and were only later repro scanned and coloured in adobe. Even the page layout was worked out by hand before completing in indesign.”

The Gary Crew book that Paul has been working on is titled 'The Visions of Ichabod X'. The book is now in the final production stages and is due for publication later this year.
