Fashion students and graduates showcased in launch of Devil Wears Prada: A New Musical
Thursday, 18 July, 2024 — Theatre Royal Plymouth, ‘The Devil Wears Prada: A New Musical’ and course leaders from BA (Hons) Costume Production and BA (Hons) Fashion Design degrees at Arts University Plymouth have revealed the winning designs to be showcased alongside the exclusive pre-West End debut of the ‘The Devil Wears Prada: A New Musical’.
<p dir="ltr">Following a call out to South West fashion designers to submit their creative work to be displayed alongside the exclusive pre-West End debut of the <a href="https://theatreroyal.com/whats-on/the-devil-wears-prada/">‘The Devil Wears Prada: A New Musical’,</a> Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP), ‘The Devil Wears Prada: A New Musical’ and course leaders from our <a href="https://www.aup.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/ba-hons-costume-production">BA (Hons) Costume Production</a> and <a href="https://www.aup.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/ba-hons-fashion-design">BA (Hons) Fashion Design</a> degrees have revealed the winning designs, which include work by five Arts University Plymouth current students and graduates.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Due to the close professional ties between Arts University Plymouth and Theatre Royal Plymouth, two BA (Hons) Costume Production students also recently completed work placements at the theatre. Second-year students Kate Keys and Elin Bachmann worked as Wardrobe Assistants with the Wardrobe Team and Costume Designer, altering and adapting a variety of designer garments for the new musical. </p>
<p dir="ltr">Six fashion and costume designers from the South West are now showcasing their creations within Theatre Royal Plymouth’s foyer during the run of the brand-new show, until 17 August. The winning designs were unveiled by ‘The Devil Wears Prada: A New Musical’ director and choreographer, Jerry Mitchell, and Amy Di Bartolomeo, playing the role of Miranda Priestly’s fiery first assistant, Emily.<br /></p>

<p dir="ltr">The youngest winning entry came from 17-year-old first-year <a href="https://www.aup.ac.uk/courses/pre-degree/ual-level-3-extended-diploma-in-art-design-fashion-textiles">Extended Diploma in Fashion & Textiles</a> student Madi Redfearn. Madi submitted a green dress with statement sleeves, floor-length open back and lace trim waistline, all inspired by themes of royalty and female empowerment.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Other winning entries from Arts University Plymouth came from second-year BA (Hons) Fashion Design and former Extended Diploma in Fashion & Textiles student Kiki Fraikue, who submitted a strapless, pleated and tucked black taffeta gown. Second-year BA (Hons) Fashion Design student Steph Earl’s submission is a repurposed wool gabardine asymmetrical top and pin-striped skirt. Part-time BA (Hons) Fashion Design student Kim Watkins submitted a knotted black lace dress and black crocheted jumper. First Class BA (Hons) Fashion Design graduate Mia Cooper submitted a full outfit comprising a faux fur-trimmed, chartreuse opera coat, teal blouse, mini skirt, corset and faux fur bucket hat.<br /></p>

<p dir="ltr">The other displayed outfit came from Identity Fashion in Royal William Yard, featuring a collaboration between the co-owner of Identity Fashion, Denitsa Avramova, and international award-winning Bulgarian designer Nikolay Pachev. The winning entries were selected from submissions from across the South West.</p>
<p dir="ltr">20-year-old Kiki Fraikue said: “Being selected was exciting and I’m so grateful to have my work on display in Theatre Royal Plymouth. I’ve had feedback that there were a lot of people stopping to look at the designs on the opening night. It’s thrilling to know that so many people are interested in fashion and will see my work alongside the other incredible pieces on display. I’m preparing to start the final year of my degree and being chosen to display my creations as part of the launch for ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ helps me to feel confident about the path I’m on.”<br /></p>
<p dir="ltr">Professor Stephen Felmingham, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at Arts University Plymouth, said: “Given the wealth of exciting fashion and costume design that comes out of the South West, I’m thrilled to see that five students from Arts University Plymouth were chosen from an open submission call to be shown alongside the launch of Theatre Royal Plymouth’s brilliant new production of The Devil Wears Prada: A New Musical. These students represent the breadth of costume and fashion design education that we offer, from our Pre-Degree Extended Diploma in Fashion & Textiles to our undergraduate courses in Costume Production and Fashion Design, and it is a great opportunity for our students to showcase their talents directly to theatre audiences.”</p>
