Turing Scheme
Study and work abroad
The Turing Scheme is the UK government’s scheme to provide funding for international opportunities in education and training across the world.

It provides an opportunity for UK organisations from the higher education, further education, vocational education and training and schools sectors to offer their students, learners and pupils life-changing experiences to study or work abroad.

Launched in September 2021, the Turing Scheme supports global outward mobility for students in the UK. At it's launch in 2021, more than 41,000 students were already preparing to study and work abroad under Turing Scheme funding.

At Arts University Plymouth, we are committed to providing a learning and teaching experience which includes an international dimension, and the Turing Scheme is integral to this commitment.

By providing students with global real world experience that is educationally, philosophically and culturally enriching, the Turing Scheme adds to the EU and international partnerships and exchanges the university already has to offer.

Our long-standing history of providing high quality, arts-based education involves providing unique and career-building opportunities, adding value to the UK and global economy and developing key international relationships.

By using the Turing Scheme, students not only take part in an international exchange which offers valuable global experience and real world working environments, it enables an understanding of professional life in creative disciplines. Improving self-confidence, interpersonal skills and networking, the scheme empowers and facilitates life-changing experiences abroad, developing students personally, academically and professionally.

Students who have used the scheme have been found to achieve higher results for their degrees, compared to students who stayed in one place, with evidence also showing that students taking part in the exchange also found work more quickly following graduation. Those who have participated in an international exchange are 44% more likely to hold managerial positions than their peers 10 years after graduation.

The Turing Scheme can also widen the choices available to those students who are eligible to take up the opportunities that our new Common Unit Framework provides - for example spending a Sandwich Year studying abroad:

The Sandwich Year (510) is a full year of placement, negotiated with the university with an approved organisation or partner, with continued access to university online resources and support - returning to complete your third year of study.

Arts University Plymouth Alumni are also eligible to apply for funding to help them take up opportunities such as placements and internships.

Turing Scheme funding is available to any Arts University Plymouth Alumni, as long as the placement takes place within 12 months of graduating.

"40% of ex-exchange students move to another country after graduating, with 93% of ex-exchange students imagining themselves living abroad in the future."

Students who are registered with a UK Higher Education provider are eligible to apply for the Turing Scheme. You can be studying full time, part time, or be recently graduated (the placement must take place within the 12 months after you graduate).

You do not need to be a UK national to be eligible for the scheme

Funding for the academic year 2023/24 will be available during the period from September 2023 to August 2024.

Study or traineeship placements can last from four weeks to 12 months.

Funding for the scheme will go towards covering travel expenses, costs of living and administrative funding for delivering the exchanges.

A higher cost of living grant will be made available if you are in any of the following categories:

If you have low household income or low socio-economic status

If you are receiving Universal Credit or income-related benefits

If you are care-experienced

If you have caring responsibilities

If neither of your parents can be found or it is not reasonably practicable to get in touch with either of them.

An amount of funding will also be provided to go towards your direct costs of travel for HE participants in these categories. We will discuss with you on application, and evidence will need to be provided.

The Turing Scheme is available to HE students and alumni (placement must take place within the 12 months after graduating) from Arts University Plymouth, providing valuable international work opportunities such as traineeships and vocational training, as well as exchanges with university partners globally.
